The Attacks Will Be "Spectacular"

The final warning.

   In the months leading up to the 9/11 attack, U.S. security agencies were starting to notice a disturbing trend taking place within the U.S. involving young Saudi men attending U.S. flight schools and learning how to fly commercial airliners. Warnings were sent to the FBI central offices in Washington D.C. from FBI field offices concerned that these Arabs might be planning to hijack commercial jets and crash them into targets on U.S. soil. The CIA had noticed that Arab terrorism was now occurring on a much larger venue, and the World Trade Center parking garage bombing had recently been determined to be the work of the Arab terrorist Randy Yousef.

   Randy Yousef had intended to cause the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, but he fortunately did not know how to properly place the explosives to carry out his plan. A member of the National Security Council requested that FBI Special Agent John O'Neill (see: FRONTLINE - The Man Who Knew) find and arrest Randy Yousef, and O'Neill was able to quickly complete that task. Yousef was eventually tried and convicted in the U.S. in 1998, but unfortunately his plan to collapse the World Trade Center towers had come to the attention of the Saudi terrorist leader Osama bin Laden who was a Civil Engineer, and thus possessed all the knowledge needed to successfully accomplish the task of collapsing the World Trade Center towers.

   The CIA was also beginning to realize that the focus of Arab terrorism was expanding to include attacks on American soil, and thus began trying to awaken the White House to that reality. On the morning of July 10, 2001, CIA agents in the Middle East sent word to CIA central offices in Virginia about a frightening development that had just occurred in Afghanistan. The Saudi terrorist leader Osama bin Laden had given his approval for a terrorist attack involving the hijacking of commercial airliners in the U.S. that would then be crashed into strategic U.S. targets. The CIA al Qaeda unit chief was informed that these attacks were intended to be "spectacular" and he in turn informed the CIA Director that the attacks were scheduled to take place in a matter of weeks.

   CIA Director George Tenet was so upset by this news that he immediately called for an emergency meeting at the White House with U.S. National Security Advisor, Condoleeza Rice. Tenet and his staff immediately sped over to the White House to inform Ms. Rice that America had to immediately be placed on a "war footing" to deal with this emergency. Ms. Rice however only agreed to raise the security threat level overseas and didn't seem to grasp the seriousness of this revelation. Tenet then decided to take his case to the President's security team in the White House. The August 6, 2001, CIA Daily Brief to President Bush was titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.," but George Tenet had not taken into account the fact that the Bush Family were oil people, and the Saudi Royal family were also oil people, and this news that Saudis were going to attack the U.S. ran counter to State Department efforts to encourage closer relations with our Saudi oil partners. Soon afterward the FBI special agent in charge of investigating the 9/11 attack was forced into an early retirement by the DOJ, and the terrorists were now free to proceed with their World Trade Center attack.

DECEPTION: The White House was not warned about the 9/11 attack.
